These old photos are my only link to grandparents on both sides of the family. Unfortunately, they all passed away before or soon after I was born. Always envied other kids for having grandparents to bond with and told them how lucky they were and hoped they didn't take it for granted.

Chrismas was always a favorite time for us kids. Mom went all out to decorate the place and dad found time to spend with us.
|
|
As we got older we'd search the house for the stash of presents. Once found, we'd slyly peel off the tape, unwrap packages and peek inside before rewrapping and taping everything up again. Mom became wise to this and one year put lava rocks in wrapped boxes. Of course, my brother instantly figured out what it was by the sound it made when jiggled. Another year, I remember one of my brother's presents being wrapped in a dozen nested boxes of varying sizes, each one individually wrapped. His present went from a box of several feet to a box for a wrist watch. Now that was a hilarious holiday!

The beginning. Oakvue Court in Pleasant Hill. Our family was one of the original buyers in the development. We grew up there and the place holds |
|
lots of memories. You wouldn't recognize it today. It isn't anything like the photo. It's more like a suburban forest with all the trees and most of the houses have been remodeled and expanded. |

My uncle Joe was a very handsome and genuinely nice guy. He had the bluest eyes you've ever seen on a human. Looking into his eyes used to just mezmerize me. He and my dad taught me how to play Cribbage. Joe was quite a math wiz.

Ellen and Carl, our second family and next door neighbors.
|
|
I think we sometimes spent more time at their house then our own. Our families were famous for the neighborhood water fights. Carl would come home and park his bachoe and truck in his side yard. My mom would stand out in our back yard with a hose waiting for the truck cab to go by and blast him. I remember Carl grabbing the hose from her one time and chasing her into the house with hose blasting away.
Ellen is very warm hearted and the best Itallian cook I've ever had the pleasure to learn from.

Doering & Dyer "Quality Chain Stores"
Corner of Alston Way and McGee Avenue in Oakland, California.

2. Dad's room
3. Our cubbyhole
A garage is beneath our front room. Our washroom is also in the basement, which is on the level of the yard. We are standing in front of the grocery part. Mr. Brand's meat market has one side of the store and is not a part of Doering & Dyer. There are many of these unusual postscripts in Oakland.
